Key Code Media recently completed an extensive audio-visual upgrade at Assumption University in Worcester, Massachusetts. The project focused on enhancing the entertainment and event capabilities of Hagan Hall’s second-floor venues: Pierre’s Pub, Game Room, and Coffeehouse Stage. The upgraded facilities are now equipped to handle a wide range of activities, including sports viewing, live music performances, open mic nights, lectures, and campus social gatherings.
Project Overview
Assumption University’s Media Department requested a modern, flexible AV system that could accommodate multiple types of events while also being easy for staff to operate. The main objectives were to install multiple TV displays, provide high-quality zoned audio, enable independent and grouped content control, and establish a dedicated AV setup for a performance stage.
The solution provided by Key Code Media included comprehensive design, installation, and training to ensure seamless integration of the new technologies into the daily operations of the university’s entertainment spaces.
Upgraded Audio-Visual Systems
The visual display setup included the installation of eight Sony displays across two main viewing areas. These displays were carefully positioned to ensure maximum visibility for all guests, regardless of their location within the venue. All displays were connected to a central head-end rack room, which housed the AV control equipment, including Extron presentation systems.
The audio system was designed to deliver clear and even sound coverage throughout the venue. A total of 18 pendant-style speakers were installed across two zones, supplemented by two ceiling-mounted speakers above the bar area. This configuration allows for flexible audio routing and zoned audio playback, accommodating both independent zone control and unified audio experiences for larger events.
Media Control and Content Distribution
A key aspect of the upgrade was the installation of an advanced media control system. The Extron NAVigator master control system was chosen for its robust capabilities and user-friendly interface. This system was paired with two 10-inch touchscreen panels located within the venue, providing staff with straightforward control over content distribution, volume levels, and display groupings. The touch panels also featured prebuilt “scenes” that allowed staff to quickly configure the AV setup for different types of events, such as sports broadcasts or live music performances.
The NAVigator system can scale up to 48+ endpoints, which supports multiple content encoders and decoders. This matrix facilitates the routing of various media inputs, including QAM cable boxes, HDMI wall plates, and background music devices, to any of the connected displays or audio zones. This flexibility ensures that the venue can easily adapt to a wide range of content and event requirements.
Dedicated Stage Setup
The coffeehouse stage was designed as a versatile space for performances and presentations. It features a removable platform, an independent PA system, and a basic DMX lighting system to accommodate various types of events. The stage audio setup includes a PreSonus mixer for FX routing and monitor mixes, as well as an HDMI input for laptop connections, supporting BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) functionality. This setup enables the university to host diverse events, from musical performances to guest lectures, with ease.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the main challenges of the project was designing an integrated AV system that could seamlessly transition between different types of events. The solution required careful planning and a customized approach to ensure all components worked together harmoniously. Key Code Media’s team worked closely with the university’s Media Department to understand their needs and develop a tailored solution that met their requirements for flexibility, ease of use, and scalability.
Additionally, the project was completed within a tight timeline to ensure the upgraded facilities were ready for the start of the new academic year. This required efficient project management and coordination with multiple stakeholders, including university staff and equipment vendors.
Systems Integration by the Key Code Media Team
Key Code Media’s expert team, based out of our Boston and New York offices, successfully designed and integrated the upgraded AV systems for Assumption University’s Hagan Hall. The project was initiated through the long-time relationship between Key Code Media’s VP of Service, Scott Williams, an Assumption University alumnus, and Thomas Burke.
Our team developed a detailed design package and executed the installation on-site, adhering to Key Code Media’s best practices for cable management and system documentation. The integration process included the setup of Extron control systems, audio routing, and video distribution equipment, all rigorously tested and commissioned for optimal performance.
Key Code Media also provided hands-on training for university staff, ensuring they were well-equipped to operate and maintain the new systems. We continue to offer ongoing technical support to ensure the systems remain reliable and effective for all future events.
From initial consultation through to final commissioning, Key Code Media is committed to delivering high-quality AV solutions, backed by strong client relationships and a dedication to meeting the unique needs of our clients
