As you might already know, Avid Technology announced Avid NEXIS | Cloudspaces at NAB this year. While the concept of cloud storage is reasonably straight forward, it becomes far more complicated within the media post-production space.
Key Code Media recently brought in Tridib Chakravarty from storageDNA to provide an insightful deep dive into the Avid NEXIS | Cloudspaces product, and how it fits within a new post-production workflow. In the video below, Tridib Chakravarty highlights the inner workings and limitations of using Avid NEXIS | Cloudspaces for media workflows, including backup, project tiering, archiving, and also cloud conforming.

During the presentation, Tridib Chakravarty discusses the difference between Avid NEXIS On-Premise workflow, Avid NEXIS “in the cloud,” and Avid NEXIS | Cloudspaces. The critical difference between NEXIS ‘in the cloud’ and Avid NEXIS | Cloudspaces- NEXIS “in the cloud” keeps all of your assets and projects stored within the cloud. Avid NEXIS | Cloudspaces allows users to save projects and media in a partial cloud workflow.
With Avid NEXIS | Cloudspaces you can back, archive, and directly access data in Cloudspaces. The problem is that each time you pull-or-push media from the cloud, there is a metered cost associated with it. This can get very expensive, very vast.
Luckily, StorageDNA is introducing a product called DNAfabric. DNAfabric is a simple to deploy data management services platform that enables you to more effectively manage data across a multitude of storage tiers- including Avid NEXIS and Avid NEXIS | Cloudspaces- powered by smart analytics and visualization. This will help facilities better manage their cloud and on-premise storage cost.
Overall, the key takeaways from the Avid NEXIS | Cloudspaces presentation:
- Avid NEXIS, Avid NEXIS cloud, Avid NEXIS | Cloudspaces are all different.
- Data between the three cannot be shared
- Don’t treat Cloudspaces like regular workspaces
- DNAfabric can help you bridge on-premise/cloud workflows
